Choosing the Right Bed Frame
6 things to consider when choosing a new bed:
- Do you prefer a traditional frame or box spring set up?
- Style - contemporary, traditional, retro, minimalist, etc.
- Do you want a noticable and eye catching bedhead - upholstered? Timber? Metal?
- Color - what is the palette you are planning
- The overall aesthetic or vibe you are going for in the room - cool and calm, warm and cozy, lush and elegant, practical and organized, etc.
- The size of the bed - consider the room size and what other furniture you will need in the room
We're currently in the research phase of picking a new bed for our Australian house, so we're ready to buy it as soon as we repatriate in January 2023!
Our preferences are:
- Metal frame
- Traditional/retro styling
- Bedhead blends into the space whilst adding a subtle touch of structure
- White
- The vibe we want is cool and calm combined with practical and organized
- Queen size
In 2018 when we bought this house I actually used tape measures and checked to see if a king size bed would fit in the room, alas there would've been no room for a bedside table on my side, so that is why we chose to go with a queen size bed. So if you are unsure always measure and lay out painters tape or something like that to give you a visual of the space.
We've decided we want a white metal bed frame with a vintage vibe, like these:
The overall aesthetic we are going for is... white and wood furniture with blue accents to lighten up what can be a somewhat dark room during gloomy winter weather.
The carpet will be replaced with wood before the room is fully set up |
It will be the master bedroom, right by the front door so we want a tidy and neat vibe with lots of practical storage overall. We'll convert the walk in closet to a dog bedroom, so the need for storage in the main part of the bedroom is paramount. A metal bedframe allows us to have storage baskets and tubs under the bed if needed.
The room isn't huge so hence we've opted for queen size rather than king.
We plan to have an open bamboo shoe rack like this:
It'll be against the diagonal wall near the entrance to the room, because it'll be handy right by the front door and because I love shoes!
I've bought a blue cotton quilt:
And I'll make nice patchwork bedrolls, pillowcases and cushion covers to add other blue tones to the mix.
We're hoping to fit one 4 x 2 IKEA kallax cube shelving unit as a dressing table between the en suite and walk in closet (dog bedroom) doorways. Also we're planning to add wood to the top like this Pinterest example:
And then hang two mirrors above it. The ensuite bathroom is quite small so this dressing table will help alleviate that issue.
For additional closet space we'll buy a couple of white IKEA Billy Bookcases for the spare corner of the room - see images below👇

It should look even better in white, with white baskets and they are great for folded clothes like T-shirts and for baskets of things like socks, bras, underwear etc. We absolutely loved the practicality and great use of space when we did that in our Parker, Colorado house in 2020!
In the window alcove I'll place a mango wood bench we already have, so our tiny dog Zoe can look out the window. Bedside tables we already have if they turn up in Australia in one piece but moving furniture from one side of the world to the other is always risky 🤞. This is the only one I have a pic of but we have several to choose from with a similar vibe:
So our plan is coming together, I just hope they still have one of the lovely beds in stock in 2 months time so we can order one!
