Maximalism Tips

There are a few concepts I am drawn to that help me pull off maximalist décor, here are just a few:

  • symmetry & non-symmetry
  • collecting
  • clustering 'like' objects together
  • embracing color
  • being bold and adventurous
I am not saying these few concepts make any maximalist home look fabulous but they are definitely ideas to think about in your space to prevent your maximalist home from looking messy!

Symmetry

I like symmetry in some objects, it is important not to broadly try to arrange the whole space with symmetrical layout but a few things in symmetry can be pleasing to the eye.

Non-symmetry

I also utilize non-symmetry particularly with wall décor. This is our photo collage wall in the Parker Colorado house.

Clustering 'Like' Objects & Collections for Display

If you collect something (it doesn't matter what) they will look most eye catching when displayed together as a collection!

Want to start a collection to help give your maximalist home a cohesive display to anchor the look? Start regular visits to a local thrift shop and see what catches your eye. Some fabulous collectibles are:

  • kitchenware
  • books
  • globes
  • old quilts
  • artwork
  • vintage sewing machines
  • vintage toys
  • pottery
  • hats
  • purses
  • coffee cups
  • plants
Check out this fabulous wooden bowl collection displayed on the wall:

Or this collection of wooden spoons!

The right manner of display can help make a collection feel at home. My vintage Pyrex is mostly displayed on vintage Cosco kitchen carts from the same era as the Pyrex. This attention to detail can help ensure your collection is displayed in an eye pleasing manner.

Embracing Color

I don't believe you have to paint your walls a bright color to have a maximalist home aesthetic! But color can enrich a maximalist space and may be added in ways other than using paint! Consider these:

  • accent chairs or couches/sofas
  • colorful collectible items (see my vintage Pyrex collection in the blog cover photo)
  • throw blankets and cushions
  • wall décor
  • rugs
  • small furniture such as end tables
In our Parker, Colorado house I had a white TV stand with teal/turquoise accents and there were various works of art hung in the room that featured teal/turquoise. That TV stand also had wood mid century style legs that helped it to complement the wood art and photo frames and accent furniture pieces.

Be Bold & Adventurous

Maximalist décor gives you the opportunity to be bold and adventurous. Décor can always be changed if at some point you need a more minimalist vibe! Try things out, look at maximalism on Pinterest, think about what types of items catch your eye and make you want more of them.
