Choosing a New Car

With any major international move comes the likelihood that you'll need to buy a new car on arrival. For us the process of choosing that car make and model has taken years of thought. What are our major considerations:
We also have a couple of minor considerations in mind such as:
  • Fuel efficiency
  • Convenience of a nearby dealership
The website we used for some of our initial research was:
We chose that website because it has all car brands which enabled us to compare options easily.
We wanted to buy a new or demo used (low mileage) vehicle because we intend to own it for 5 to 10 years. Then we considered our budget alongside the size & functionality we wanted in the vehicle. A few things important to us were:
  • Trunk/boot space large enough for our folding Oru kayaks and gear
  • Trunk/boot space that fits two golf bags and push carts (with rear seats folded down)
  • Ground clearance sufficient for bike racks
  • 4 door with large hatchback
  • Engine capacity - 0 to 100 km time is useful to assess car speed off the mark for things like merging on to freeways efficiently
We also wanted a brand we consider to be reliable based on previous experience, reviews, etc. And alongside all those considerations we were also aware that we were biased towards cars that suited our aesthetic preferences.

Our favorite is the Suzuki Vitara:
Buying cars online is commonplace now and our local Rockingham Suzuki dealership was happy to sell us the car in advance, so the turbo model in white with a tow hitch (for bike racks) and dark window tinting added will be waiting for us to pickup the day we arrive!
Can't wait to pick it up January 2023!
