Project Planning
The kitchen in our Australian house has a weird narrow nook between the pantry and the oven:
It is quite narrow and there is no power socket in the nook, with solid brick walls adding one was going to require ugly conduit visible on the wall, so ever since we bought the house in 2018 I have been pondering what to do with it to maximize functionality of my kitchen space. I am not interested in a full kitchen renovation but I do want to invest in good storage solutions within the kitchen.
And I have plenty of time on my hands at the moment whilst we wait to repatriate to Australia in January 2023 once our shipping container and dogs arrive back in Australia. So I came up with an ambitious plan to build open shelving for my baking supplies above the existing countertop:
By custom building a spice rack that fills the length and width (not depth) of the lower area with the tiled backsplash, I can hide the very dated tile that is there. There will still be a void behind the spice shelving on the countertop, but I can store longer term stuff behind it as the spice shelf will simply be sitting on the countertop towards the front not actually attached. I have already bought spice jars like these but had not gotten around to implementing their use when we decided to repatriate, so the jars will be ready for use on arrival in Australia in January!
Here is a Pinterest example of the type of spice shelving and bottles I am planning for:
Then above that hubby will build me some wood shelving like this which I will stain and coat with a clear poly protectant layer:
I will buy a couple of cute baskets online for various bagged baking supplies and also some containers from the IKEA 365+ range for all my baking supplies and I have even created the initial shopping list:
I will also buy printed labels for the containers and spice jars. Like these:
I really feel this plan will ensure efficient use of the easily reachable space and save me bending into the bottom of the pantry or into the low cupboards to get things out when I am baking. I have a bad back so I am always looking for ways to minimize bending.
I can't imagine getting this all built until mid to late 2023 because we have a LOT of small projects like this planned, but at least all the elements can be bought and set aside for when we are ready. Perhaps it is a nice rainy day project to do during Perth's Winter 2023 (June, July, August).
