3 Tips - Collections and Maximalism
One common feature of maximalism home decor is collections. Maximalists are often the types of people drawn to collecting.
I collect several things.
My biggest collection is vintage kitchenware particularly Pyrex mixing bowls and bakeware. The above picture shows one of 4 large bookshelves full (and there are 6 smaller shelf units full as well).
Three tips for beginning collectors:
- It's important to collect the things that mean something to you - you should be drawn to these items naturally (magnetism)
- Not each piece of a collection has to be fabulously perfect on it's own - e.g. vintage items have flaws that can really add interest especially once viewed as part of a collection (imperfection)
- Collections don't have to be huge - 3 of something is a collection, so consider the size of the space you have to display and store your collectibles, collections don't have to mean clutter! (display)
So assumed up you need to remember:
M for Magnetism
I for Imperfection
D for Display
Thrift stores/op shops are terrific places to find collectibles but you can collect new items too such as books, plants, art, hand crafted items.
So basically don't just walk in to a big box store or home decor specialty shop and buy things, it'll just look like a catalogue page rather than add character to your space.
